ABOUT TOWAHagoita Decoration Workshop

With "See, Feel, and Enjoy Japanese Culture" as our concept, we offer visitors a unique opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind hagoita by combining over 100 types of decorative parts.
We would like to convey the time-honored Japanese culture to people both in Japan and abroad through modern-style hagoita, which are appreciated as gifts for various occasions, creative interior decorations, and lucky charms.

Hospitality of Towa

Admiring
We have added a contemporary Towa-style design to traditional hagoita, which have a 500-year history! Our beautiful store, vividly decorated with colorful modern-style hagoita, is a must-see.
Delight in Choosing
You can choose Tsumami-zaiku flowers from the designs in your selected hagoita decoration course or the Hitohira-tsumami Experience (simple tsumami-zaiku)! Which ones would you choose? Which colors go well together? By adding unique parts as an option, you can create a one-of-a-kind hagoita!
Creating
You will make two flowers: one using maru-tsumami (round figure) and the other using ken-tsumami (sharp pointed figure), which are the basics of the tsumami-zaiku technique. It is a simple task, though it might be harder than you think... Enjoy a traditional craft experience.
Customizing
You will colorfully decorate your hagoita, either by following an example design or by arranging it in your own unique way! Adding your handcrafted flowers will make the experience even more thrilling!
Making it memorable
Have your name converted into Japanese Kanji! By writing your name in Kanji at the back of your hagoita with a calligraphy brush pen by yourself, your one-of-a-kind souvenir will be completed.
Recording
We have a Kyoto-style photo spot in our store. With elegant background music, our store is perfect for photogenic moments to share on social media!
Wrap
We will wrap the experience set in "furoshiki", a traditional Japanese cloth used to wrap and carry things.

What is
Tsumamizaiku?

It is a traditional craft designated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government that has been passed down since the Edo period, and is said to have originated as a handicraft technique that was enjoyed as a hobby by court ladies and maids of feudal lords. To decorate combs and hairpins, small pieces of cloth cut into squares are combined with multiple "fold" and "tsumami" to create the shapes of seasonal beauties of nature, adding color to a woman's sunny day.

Made by Kinuyo Tomura, registered intangible cultural property holder in Arakawa Ward
